access mobile site version on desktop
  • I know it may seem strange to want to access the mobile version of a website on a regular desktop or laptop computer, but my father who is blind needs to use a screen reader to access my site.  The Shiword theme unfortunantly isn't very accessable with all the sliding menus, etc.  The mobile version obviously looks very accessible.  Is there a way I can directly link to the mobile version?  If it works,  I can add the link to my site and use it as a mobile link and at the bottom as a screen reader accessable link.  The funny thing is from time to time when I'm using Firefox 9.0.1 it sometimes thinks it's a mobile browser, but the url is still the same as the desktop version (http://loftonspace.com/doggygoo/).  I've tried using the following link to access the mobile version of my site.
    http://www.loftonspace.com/doggygoo/wp-content/themes/shiword/mobile/index.php
All it shows me is a blank page though.

I know JAWS (Job Access With Speech) can be detected by websites and then can be redirected to a more accessible version of the site.  Is that even possible here?

    Any help would be great.

  • Hi there,

Bernard, from profusion.biz, made a theme switcher for shiword, just follow the instruction in the attached file.

I think we will add it in the next shiword release :)

I don't think you should need further help, but for any question, just ask ;)

P.S. the file is a .php but actually is not, you have to mod shiword files

  • Well you were wrong.  I'm sorry.  It didn't work.  I followed the instruction to a T.  It wasn't enough, as soon as I uploaded the updated functions.php and the widgets.php, My entire site went BLANK.  I couldn't even access the admin page.  What did I do wrong?

I've attached a Hyperlink to the file on my server that outlines the steps I took to add this feature.  I hope it helps.

Link to steps taken to add mobile access from desktop.

Hint, It's a little long.  So long the comment section said it had too many characters.  About 3,500.

    Sorry about that.

I was modifying my main site first rather than the more popular subdomain Doggy GOO

I was smart and backed up the old function and widget files first.  So the site is back online.
  • I must admit I've never tested it, but I've seen it in action and it does work, maybe instructions lack some step.

The new release of shiword will take some time to be developed as Jimo is working on a major release with several changes.

I'll make a child theme for you, just be patient for a couple of day
  • Thank You.  You've been most helpful.  It's good to know you can still find good support out there.
  • mmm errr
From what you've wrote, I thought it was harder...

Anyway, install the child as a new theme (don't remove existing shiword)
inside the "shiword-manual-switch" folder you'll find a "replace-shiword-files" folder with a functions.php file, replace existing original shiword file with that one.

Activate the child theme and add "Go mobile" widget where you want.

Have to say is not my best child, but it works fine ;)

    Download here http://www.twobeers.net/downloads?did=37

    Cheers

P.S. this child will work only with v 2.09, before updating Shiword to a new version, be sure that version has switch-manually-to-mobile reading the changelog

  • I followed the link and clicked download but got a 404 error.
  • asd
I've put a / into the name, and it brake thing, try again now
  • im out of the office right now I'll look at it when I get back this evening I'll get back to you then thanks again for your help
  • ok :)
we'll be out for the week end (as usual)
    cheers
  • I tried it.  It gave me a 500 internal server error.  I don't know if I want to continue trying.  My site was down for almost an hour while I tried to fix the problem, and revert back to original.  All is well now.  It's back to the way it was.  I think I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what.  I just don't know if I have enough experience working with this stuff YET!!  I want to learn more.
If you can help with my newest discussion I would greatly appreciate it and I'll be happy.

01/22/2012- This is my update.  I got it to work but I feel like it's limping along a little bit.  Pages seem slower to load, and occasionally I'm still getting the "500 Internal server error"  If I hit refresh, it goes away.  It only does that five out of every hundred tries.  The mobile switch override does work good though.  I really like that part.  As soon as you guys get the update, let me know.

One final note on this discussion.  I did have to redo the header image, background image and select the custom menu again.  I also had to delete the hook again about the custom Login Css.  Because I'm using the Theme My Login Plugin.

I still need help on my latest discussion and I think I'll be good to go.

Thanks guys for all your help.

  • Hi there,
500 internal server are normally caused by misconfigured .htaccess or server problems, a theme won't cause a 500 err as long as it doesn't try to alter server configuration. I don't think that child theme does something like that, but, as I've told you many times, it isn't a TwoBeers production, it's another-user-hack, I've just put it on a child for you without any deeper check.
You're using a cache plugin, I don't know how that very plugin work, but be aware there are tons of cache plugins out there and you should always disable cache when testing or adding new plugins/themes/widget to see if your site is really working (cache is for visitors, not for developer - p.s. your cache shuold be excluded during mobile, or your site will be sometimes displaied as mobile in desktop browser and that's because cache has renew during mobile).

About slow load and error 500, keep an eye also on your plugins and read your host error log.
A couple of month ago we use to have tons of access denied errors on our sites, I first thought it was a security permissions problem, but I finally find out it came from a lack of memory. Why the f#§%k I'm telling you this?! Just to aware you, as a student, that, in the digital world, as in the real one, things are rarely what they seem.

About the "redo", that's ok: a child theme act as another theme, it uses original theme functions, but it is another theme, so new header, new background, etc.

About your last discussion, please, do follow my suggestion: use firebug and try make your own page template (or maybe the forum plugin let you add a custom css, as lots of forum plugin do), it's a basic css hack, and, as a web developer student, you should give it a try. (off course I'll help you and answer your questions, but I won't do it for you).

    Cheers

  • I thank you so much.  I've asked my instructor for some advice.  Unfortunantly he's told me be patiant and we'll cover it later on in the semester. I'm fighting the urge to learn more and read ahead.  I'll look into the css style sheet for the forum plugin.  Thanks again for your help.  I may call Yahoo up and ask them.  I did get an email from them saying that they would be doing system maintenance Tommorrow.  THey said my site itself wouldn't be affected, but My SQL would be down.  Thus my forum, comments, and system backup would be down.  I'm going to make a pop up tommorrow letting my users know of the maintenance issues.
  • another suggestion is to have a test blog in local, work on remote host always take time and can take users to disservice.
try something like http://www.apachefriends.org/en/index.html it's really easy to set up and use.
